Temples of Central India

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Khajuraho, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, boasts some of the most magnificent monuments still standing today. Built around the turn of the first millennium, these mark a mid-point in a longer historic trajectory in a region that served as the birthplace of the Indian temple form as a whole. This lecture details the evolution of temples from the Gupta Empire through the present day, looking at how temples engaged broader physical, social, and religious landscapes.
