This lecture announces plans for the first volume in a project to document the history of all of the Indian Princely States based on themes generated by the Robbins collection of paintings, photographs, “popular art”, fiscal and court documents, numismatic and philatelic items and other objects. This study will include topics like the hundreds of tiny states in Western India, states with scattered territories, trade, administration, and relations with British India as well as art and the princes themselves.

Kenneth X. Robbins

Kenneth X. Robbins MD is a psychiatrist, collector, archivist, curator, and scholar. His interests include local and regional Indian rulers and Indian minority groups like Jews and African Muslims. He has edited three books (African Elites in India, Jews and the Indian National Art Project, and Western Jews in India) and is the co-author of NYPL Point: Africans in India: From Slaves to General and Rulers andJewish Heritage of the Deccan. He is working on multiple volumes including Muslims and Jews in South Asia, Indian Jews in the Movies, Holocaust Era Refugees in India, Africans in India, and Maharajas and Nawabs of “Gujarat”. He has organized scholarly conferences and curated many exhibitions on Indian history, art, medicine, philately, religion, and cinema.
