Art and Architecture of the Badami Chalukyas

29 - 31 Mar '12 06:30 PM - 08:30 PM

The monuments of the Badami Chalukyas, dating from the 6th-8th centuries, are among the best preserved, earliest examples of Hindu architecture in India. Concentrated in and around the Chalukya capital of Badami, the temples signal the transition from the rock-cut to structural techniques, as well as the initial phases of the Dravida and Nagara styles, which are here uniquely juxtaposed. The sculptures with which the temples are embellished present a profuse range of sacred icons as well accompanying decorative themes. Both architectural and sculptural aspects will be discussed by George Michell in the light of the most up to date scholarship.

Dr. George Michell

Dr. George Michell is an architectural historian who has conducted numerous research projects in many parts of India, beginning with his doctoral work on the Early Chalukya structural temples in the early 1970s. In the 1980s and 1990s he co-directed an international team of scholars and students documenting the Hampi-Vijayanagara site. Among his many publications are Banaras: The City Revealed, Vijayanagara: Splendour in Ruins, The Great Temple at Thanjavur and Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal.
