The monuments of the Badami Chalukyas, dating from the 6th-8th centuries, are among the best preserved, earliest examples of Hindu architecture in India. Concentrated in and around the Chalukya capital of Badami, the temples signal the transition from the rock-cut to structural techniques, as well as the initial phases of the Dravida and Nagara styles, which are here uniquely juxtaposed. The sculptures with which the temples are embellished present a profuse range of sacred icons as well accompanying decorative themes. Both architectural and sculptural aspects will be discussed by George Michell in the light of the most up to date scholarship. |
