Tagore explored the possibility of expression across forms to the last of his days, moving from poetry to operatic forms to short story to novel, essay, drama, music and painting. The two performances (details below) are part of the two-day round table conference - conceived and coordinated by Prabodh Parikh on behalf of the Sahitya Akademi - that asks what in Tagore’s work encourages us to think creatively on the possibility of one form emerging from another. We shall walk through Tagore with an eye to the visual in words, the dramatic in the pictorial, the cinematic in poetry. While the conference is for invitees only, the performances are open to public on first come, first serve basis.

Dastangoi
An adaptation of Ghare Baire
Set against the backdrop of the swadeshi (home rule) movement in Bengal, following its sudden and arbitrary partition by the then British viceroy in India, Lord Curzon, in 1905, The Home and the World was originally published in Bengali (as Ghare Baire) in 1915. As director of Dastangoi, Mahmood Farooqui, alongwith Danish Husain, has initiated a recitative performance of the novel; keeping true to the style of Dastangoi. Traditionally Dastans have depended on texts with great aural qualities. This will be the first major experiment to convert a great modern literary text into an oral one.

Rabindrasangeet
Paramita Bandyopadhyay
Rabindrasangeet, for Paramita is intrinsically woven into her life, her emotions, expressions and experience. Her training and diploma are from the renowned institution Dakshinee: Kolkata and she continues to reinvent her rendition, drawing inspiration from ‘world music’. She has been travelling with her music all over India and abroad. Though primarily a soloist, Paramita derives great pleasure from working with collaborators not only from the world of music but also from theatre, film, dance, fine arts and other artistic disciplines.
